The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) is pleased to present the first email of the Celiac Disease Awareness Campaign. We seek to keep the stakeholders engaged as NIDDK moves forward in its effort to educate healthcare professionals about the diagnosis and treatment of celiac disease. In addition to informing you, we also hope to elicit your opinions on a range of issues that surface as the campaign is refined. You are receiving this email because of your past commitment to National Institutes of Health-organized celiac disease efforts. As the need arises, we may poll you on specific topics. To offer feedback or unsubscribe from these newsletters, please write to celiac@info.niddk.nih.gov.

NIDDK is developing a website for health professionals and consumers seeking additional information about celiac disease. The site will feature the NIH consensus statement, NIDDK-developed educational materials, and links to patient, professional, and voluntary organizations that focus on celiac disease.

NIDDK is planning periodic celiac disease emails highlighting campaign components and initiatives. The email update also will include a brief feature story that organizations may use or adapt for their own publications.

Our most up-to-date fact sheet on celiac disease, based on the findings of the consensus panel, is now available online and in printed format (8.5" x 11") from NIDDK. The publication can be ordered at the NIDDK's National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse at digestive.niddk.nih.gov or by phone at 1–800–891–5389. An easy-to-read version of the fact sheet is in development.

Over the past 2 months, NIDDK conducted focus groups in four cities to gather physician input on the challenges of diagnosing celiac disease. The information doctors provided about awareness, knowledge, available resource materials, and experience with diagnosing celiac disease will serve as the basis for developing the Awareness Campaign's communications tools.

A professionally printed version of the NIH celiac disease consensus statement is available for order through the Clearinghouse. As with other NIDDK publications, single copies are available free of charge.
